Vacant property registration ordinance under discussion for Watertown, NY

Watertown, NY: City Council began discussing additional options for vacant property registration ordinances.

The suggested parameters at the meeting include: requiring owners of a property to register within 30 days of it becoming vacant; to pay a $50 registration fee if the property remains vacant for more than 90 days; and payment of $750 for purposes of an annual inspection for the vacant property.

If the owner of a property deemed vacant fails to register and pay all fees within a timely manner, according to the details so far discussed in the meeting, then the total registration fee, inspection fee, and an administrative fee of $150 would be filed as a lien against the property.

The Council decided to continue discussions in May, with the possibility of voting on the discussed ordinance during that same meeting.
