Real estate investment now trading under its own individual category on market

Nation: Real estate is now, actively, operating in its own category under S&P Dow Jones Indices and MSCI, apart from the rest of the financial classification (banks and insurance companies); following announced changes in early 2016.

Those looking for real estate investment will find it listed in the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS); real estate is the first new sector addition to S&P Dow Jones since 1999.

Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) and real estate operating companies will constitute the eleventh sector of the GCIS, with the caveat of mortgage REIT continuing to be listed in the financial category.

The change comes due to positive performance of REIT in the market since the 2008 housing crash, with REITs making up approximately 3 percent of the market and accounting for more than $900 billion in equity market capitalization.
