Vacant property registration may now be performed by the County of New Castle, DE, if owners fail to register on time

New Castle County, DE: Vacant property may now be registered by the County, if property owners fail to file timely registration, to help remedy blight and improve community property values.

The law requires a property that has been vacant for 90 consecutive days to be registered within 10 days, or face fines and the then ability for the County to itself register the property.

If a vacant property is registered by the County, there is an additional $1,000 fee in additional to all registration fees and other such costs. The annual registration fees are as follows:

Less than 1 year: $100; 1 year up to 2 years: $500; 2 years up to 3 years: $1,000; 3 years up to 5 years: $2,000; 5 years up to 10 years: $3,500; 10 years or greater: $5,000 plus an additional $500 per year past 10.

The fee schedule will reset if a property registration is transferred to a new and unassociated entity for ownership of the property.

Any unpaid charges, fees, or penalties will be considered a tax lien and collected in the same manner as other County real estate taxes.
