Schenectady, NY, increases fees for its vacant property registration ordinance

Schenectady, NY: City Council has approved an amendment to their vacant property registration ordinance, increasing annual fees, going forward.

The ordinance’s previous costs were: 1st year $1,050; 2nd year $1,550; 3rd year $2,050; 4th year $3,550; and 5th and subsequent years $4,050. All fees are required to be paid within 30 days of notice, or be subject to penalties as laid out in City Code.

The revised costs are: 1st year $2,500; 2nd year $3,000; 3rd year $3,500; 4th year $5,000; and 5th and subsequent years $5,500.

All owners for vacant properties must also submit a plan for rehabilitation, demolition, or have the property actively marketed, and buildings vacant for 90 days or more must be secured per City Code.

Owners of vacant properties that are maintained to Code or being updated within an established timeline may appeal to the City to avoid requirements to register; though granting a non-registration requirement for a given vacant property is at the City’s discretion.
